Product Details
This is an authentic vintage handwoven huipil textile currently for sale at the Chichicastenango and Panajachel textiles markets in Guatemala. These huipiles are generally purchased by Mayan women as going out wear, and worn on special occasions. Some huiples are ceremonial.
Huipiles are 1 or 2 rectangular woven panels sewn together with the head hole cut in the middle. They are not meant to be fitted and have no stretch in the fabric.
They are predominantly cotton, and very occasionally silk or wool. The Mayan women wear them tucked into a high waisted skirt, but westerners usually wear them untucked or as ponchos with the side seams open.
Size & Fit
Huipiles can be worn as a casual fit blouse or a huipil that is much wider than you would normally wear can be worn as a poncho with the side seams open. If the huipil is quite short you can turn it at an angle so the peaks are at the front and back.
Mayans are a short race so generally the huipiles are between 50cm - 60cm long, but some are shorter. They look good worn untucked and just reaching your waist, but if you prefer hip length look for the longer huipiles. The cotton fabric tends to be much thicker than most western blouses so take that into account if you wish to tuck them in.
See size guide to find your fit.
Shipping & Returns
If your shipping region is not visible, reach out via the contact page for shipping adjusted to your region.
Textiles are sourced throughout regional Guatemala and may take 1-2 weeks to complete their transit from vendor to shipping agent to DHL. Once DHL has your textile you will receive a tracking number. Any custom duties or taxes a country may charge are the customers responsibility.
REUTRNS
Returns are accepted for undisclosed damage or obvious stains. Returns or exchanges are not accepted for issues relating to size, fit, weight, or colour variations.
Measurements (length and width) are provided in each listing — it is the buyer's responsibility to review these details before purchasing.
Because these are vintage textiles, some loose threads or gentle fabric softening are characteristic of their history, not defects. However, if an item arrives with significant, undisclosed damage or a major stain not mentioned in the listing description, a return will be honoured.
To Request a Return for Damage:
1. Contact us within 3 days of delivery with your order number and clear, well-lit photos of the undisclosed damage or stain.
2. If approved, we will provide a prepaid return shipping label.
3. Items must be shipped back in their original, unwashed, and unworn condition.

Product Information
All huipiles are vintage and may show signs of wear. I ask my vendors to send a report and photos if there are any stains or damage.
Mayan women do not have washing machines, so the huipil you receive has always been handwashed. I recommend for longevity to continue handwashing.
Many huipiles have cotton threads that have been dyed naturally, so when washing some colour may leech out. To offset this Mayan women always wash in cool, room temperature water. Never wash in warm water as that unlocks the dye.
If any colour leeches when washing in cool water then add a handful of salt on the final rinse and this sets the colours each time.
Due to the handwoven and vintage nature of these products, small defects and signs of wear and tear, fading or ageing are not uncommon. We feel this only adds to the unique story behind each huipil.

Textile Provenance
Huipil (pronounced wee-peel) designs are infused with ancient Mayan traditions of nature, astrology and ritual. Designs and symbols, representing gods, the natural world and protection for the household are interwoven throughout the fabrics.
Corte designs (Mayan womans skirt) are most commonly a jaspè ikat that is unique to the Mayans. The variety within this design range from simple stripes with almost indiscernible ikat to richly complicated ikat designs depicting stylised animals and symbols of nature.
Tzute textiles are a ceremonial or all purpose rectangular cloth that is hand woven and often embroidered with elaborate stylised designs.

Brocade Weaving
Supplemental weft, a technique integral to the art of weaving, involves the introduction of an extra yarn or thread into the fabric, contributing intricate patterns and embellishments.
Particularly utilized in crafting the brocade textiles for huipiles, this method is known for its time-consuming and intricate nature.
Skilled artisans carefully weave supplemental weft threads, investing significant time and attention to detail, to achieve the unique and elaborate designs featured here.
The complexity of this process adds a touch of artistry to each huipil, making it a distinctive and luxurious addition to your wardrobe.
