Fair Trade Ikat Cushions
These Ikat cushions are naturally dyed and hand woven by a women’s weaving co-op in San Juan, Guatemala.
Irma, pictured below, does the dyeing process which produces the design and then lays the cotton out ready for weaving. Other women in the co-op finish the weaving and then hand the textiles to Lucia who sews the cushions with an overlocker I purchased for her.
All these women receive fair pay for their work. I started paying more for the ikat fabric when I discovered Irma had undervalued their time. And Lucia my sewing girl receives double the going rate for her work.
Purchasing these cushions helps provide income security for a number of women in a poverty stricken country.
